Plant Roots Steer Resilience to Perturbation of River Floodplains

چکیده

Freshwater ecosystems along river floodplains host among the greatest biodiversity on Earth and are known to respond anthropic pressure. For water impounded systems, resilience changes in natural flow regime is believed be bidirectional. Whether such prevents system from returning pristine conditions after reverse as yet unclear, though widely documented. In this work, we show that temporal irreversibility of recover their status may explained by dynamics riparian water-tolerant plant roots. Our model a quantitative tool will benefit scientists practitioners predicting impact changing regimes long-term floodplain dynamics.

Unsteady 1D flow model of a river with partly vegetated floodplains - application to the Rhine River

A relatively simple unsteady flow model was proposed which estimates velocities, friction factors and the components of discharge in the main channel and on the floodplains simultaneously. Bottom roughness of the main channel and the floodplains, the flow resistance of vegetation on the floodplains and the flow resistance caused by the momentum transfer between the main channel and the floodpla...

Clustering under Perturbation Resilience

Motivated by the fact that distances between data points in many real-world clustering instances are often based on heuristic measures, Bilu and Linial [6] proposed analyzing objective based clustering problems under the assumption that the optimum clustering to the objective is preserved under small multiplicative perturbations to distances between points. In this paper, we provide several res...

Metric Perturbation Resilience

We study the notion of perturbation resilience introduced by Bilu and Linial (2010) and Awasthi, Blum, and Sheffet (2012). A clustering problem is α-perturbation resilient if the optimal clustering does not change when we perturb all distances by a factor of at most α. We consider a class of clustering problems with center-based objectives, which includes such problems as k-means, k-median, and...

Floodplains as an Achilles' heel of Amazonian forest resilience.

The massive forests of central Amazonia are often considered relatively resilient against climatic variation, but this view is challenged by the wildfires invoked by recent droughts. The impact of such fires that spread from pervasive sources of ignition may reveal where forests are less likely to persist in a drier future. Here we combine field observations with remotely sensed information for...

Monitoring Vegetation Biomass in River Floodplains Using Imaging Spectroscopy

For optimal management of river floodplains in the Netherlands monitoring of natural vegetation succession and hydrodynamic processes is essential. A key biophysical parameter to monitor floodplains is vegetation biomass. Not only because it influences the hydraulic resistance determining the discharge capacity of the floodplains, but also indicating species diversity and habitat heterogeneity ...
